Read More"Anticipation"
That eagerly anticipated moment, a minute before the bride-to-be enters the church, where everyone falls quiet and the groom stands nervously next to his best man. Max’s face tells the story perfectly in this picture as he awaits Natalie’s walk down the aisle with her father at the Church of San Vicente in Ibiza. As a photographer this is one of the most challenging parts of the day as I need to be in position at the back of the church to catch this moment before rapidly changing my camera settings to photograph the bride as she makes her walk up the aisle before running to the other end of the church so I am out of the vicars ways to start the ceremony.
In my next blog post “The First Look” I will be posting the moment that Natalie and Max meet at the alter :)

New Year Portrait Sessions #2
Early January for me as a wedding photographer has always been about planning for the years upcoming weddings, developing and fine tuning new photography skills and styles, meeting with wedding suppliers and also couples to discuss plans. Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet up with Chas Appeti from theperfectdaywedding.co.uk to talk about our 2016 plans for weddings and a few other projects. Chas is a cinematic wedding videographer and has shot over 25 x weddings in the last couple of years over the UK. It was interesting for me, as the wedding photographer, to get an insight into how a wedding videographer goes about their work on the day. We found some time at the end of the day to test out some new lenses and also shoot a few portraits in my studio. This is one of my favourite captures...I like how the light falls off around Chas’ face structure and also leaves a feint out line of his upper body.

I took these shots whilst covering a wedding at the East Quay wedding venue in Whitstable, Kent. I knew the venue pretty well as my sister had got married there a few weeks earlier but it wasn’t until I pulled out the SLR’s that I realised what a special and unique venue it was for creative shooting. Loads of rustic backdrops, the beach (which is literally right next to it) and some rather cool surf boards and an American “desert-like” wagon by the entrance. I suppose the best way to describe it would be “quirky” and “relaxed” – a great place for an all in one wedding where there is no stress running from venue to venue and for the wedding party to relax ON the beach after the ceremony with some drinks and world famous Whitstable oysters. It half reminded me of two of my favourite places in this world, the Mojave Desert in California and Dungeness

There is something about witnessing , capturing and being part of a big reunion of family and friends that you cant just describe. Every wedding is different but the coming together of all the guests at the beginning of the day will always throw together a ton of different emotions in to one melting pot. Some guests are overjoyed to see relatives they have not seen for decades, others are shy & nervous whilst some just like to sit back and take it all in with an early beer. I love these moments and they are what spring up some of the most exciting photographs as I weave between the guests capturing some unique interactions. The guests to me are what bring the fun energy and atmosphere to a wedding day and I love to capture these moments in the most natural way possible.

New Year Portrait Sessions.
During some rare downtime from shooting weddings this weekend I got together with one of my best mates, Michael Lambeth, to photograph a few portraits of him before he got rid of famous ginger beard. It was nice to slow down and try a few new techniques before the wedding season shoots back to life in the next couple of months. With this shot I wanted to give it a 2/3 tone look so the red in his beard was really prominent. In terms of lighting to achieve the look I used a soft box to the right of him (45 degree's), set my camera on a 10 second countdown and quickly ran in front of him to my left with a giant gold reflector to give his face a kind of warm glow. For this years weddings i'm going to be shooting similar portraits with the groom which I recon will give a strong timeless/classic feel to parts of the wedding album. It would be great to hear your thoughts on the portrait :)

"The Kiss' - Best of 2015. James Davies Wedding Photography
“The Kiss” - its without doubt the most important shot of the day, it lasts for around 2-3 seconds and as a photographer its make or break. I took this shot of Sarah and Phil in the chapel at the Holy Trinity Church in Margate, the place was tiny and really dark but it brought with it a really nice intimate atmosphere. I knew with such a small venue that I could only choose one place to stand and I had to stick to it...I made sure I got to the back of the room and had space to manoeuvre, I knelt on the floor to give the shot a powerful upwards viewpoint and released the shutter as soon as they embraced. The main reason I like this photo is because it captures the moment at the height of the embrace with Sarah’s hands holding Phils face, the very beginning of the kiss and Phil’s arms around Sarah’s waist. It really was an unforgettable moment

As the years draws to a close I thought it would be a good idea over the next few days to share some of my favourite images I have taken during 2015. This lady, a guest at Jo and James's Broadstairs wedding, was really easy to photograph...so photogenic and always smiling, it was impossible to grab a bad shot of her. I took this candid portrait as she broke into laughter during the hilarious best mans speech...

One of my favourite parts of the wedding day, once all the pressures and energy of the ceremony and the running around are over and everyone is sipping their champagne I like to take aside the bride for a few moments to catch a few classic portrait shots. I love the look of the Canon 85mm 1.2 ii lens and although its built like a tank and shaped like a grape fruit it renders the most amazing shots if you catch it correctly at its widest aperture. Below is a shot of Nikki I shot this summer in the grounds of St Augustines at Westgate on Sea...a beautiful grade II listed building with lots of lush green garden surroundings that were great for some stunning backdrops :) James Davies Wedding Photography
The details...
Its not until you are involved in the preparation of a wedding that you appreciate how much thought and little details go into making the day so unique and personalised for the Bride and Groom. As a photographer it is my duty on the day to identify the little details and photograph them in the most creative way possible....basically putting my own spin on things to give them an ethereal look. For this shot I focused just on the pink rose, I remember seeing it and thinking how sharp the petals looked.....I had to centralise and isolate it to give it power and presence (you can only imagine how long the bouquet took to make), the whole photographing process took just a few seconds but its one of my favourite detail shots of 2015 :)
