Beautiful Botany Bay in Broadstairs :)

Botany Bay in Broadstairs is without doubt one of Kent's most beautiful coastal locations and when I was asked by Sarah & Phil to photograph their wedding here in the Spring of 2015 I jumped at the opportunity. I managed to pull aside the newly weds for a quick 10 minutes during the golden hour and shot some relaxed pictures of them together as they walked across the top of the bay as the sunlight was at its most soft. Early January for me as a wedding photographer has always been about planning for the years upcoming weddings, developing and fine tuning new photography skills and styles, meeting with wedding suppliers and also couples to discuss plans. Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet up with Chas Appeti from theperfectdaywedding.co.uk to talk about our 2016 plans for weddings and a few other projects. Chas is a cinematic wedding videographer and has shot over 25 x weddings in the last couple of years over the UK. It was interesting for me, as the wedding photographer, to get an insight into how a wedding videographer goes about their work on the day. We found some time at the end of the day to test out some new lenses and also shoot a few portraits in my studio. This is one of my favourite captures...I like how the light falls off around Chas’ face structure and also leaves a feint out line of his upper body.

"The Kiss' - Best of 2015. James Davies Wedding Photography

“The Kiss” - its without doubt the most important shot of the day, it lasts for around 2-3 seconds and as a photographer its make or break. I took this shot of Sarah and Phil in the chapel at the Holy Trinity Church in Margate, the place was tiny and really dark but it brought with it a really nice intimate atmosphere. I knew with such a small venue that I could only choose one place to stand and I had to stick to it...I made sure I got to the back of the room and had space to manoeuvre, I knelt on the floor to give the shot a powerful upwards viewpoint and released the shutter as soon as they embraced. The main reason I like this photo is because it captures the moment at the height of the embrace with Sarah’s hands holding Phils face, the very beginning of the kiss and Phil’s arms around Sarah’s waist. It really was an unforgettable moment

The details...

Its not until you are involved in the preparation of a wedding that you appreciate how much thought and little details go into making the day so unique and personalised for the Bride and Groom. As a photographer it is my duty on the day to identify the little details and photograph them in the most creative way possible....basically putting my own spin on things to give them an ethereal look. For this shot I focused just on the pink rose, I remember seeing it and thinking how sharp the petals looked.....I had to centralise and isolate it to give it power and presence (you can only imagine how long the bouquet took to make), the whole photographing process took just a few seconds but its one of my favourite detail shots of 2015 :)
