Westenhanger Castle Wedding Photographer, Hythe

I’ve photographed a number of weddings at Westenhanger Castle over the last few years, and it’s a cracking venue for photos. You’ve got old stone walls, brick rooms full of character and a proper bit of history, all in the village of Westenhanger near Hythe.

A castle with royal history

The castle dates back to the 16th century and has links to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. At the centre of it is a Grade I listed manor house, with gardens, a medieval dovecote and Rosamond’s Tower in the grounds. The coordinators are part of the Glow Events team and really know their stuff, so the day runs without any fuss.

Gazebo, hall or marquee

There are three places to get married. The thatched gazebo is lovely for an outdoor ceremony in good weather. The banqueting hall has exposed brick walls and warm lighting, which works brilliantly for photos, especially in black and white. For bigger weddings, there’s the marquee.

Getting ready in the old rooms

The rooms in the old house are all brick, wood and small windows. They’re darker than a modern bridal suite, but the light coming through those windows is perfect for moody, natural photos of the morning.

My favourite confetti spot

The confetti walk outside the front of the house is one of my favourite spots anywhere in Kent. The old brick behind you and a crowd of guests either side make for some brilliant shots every time.

Rosamond’s Tower and the castle walls

For portraits, we’ll spend about 20 minutes around Rosamond’s Tower and the old castle walls. The ivy-covered stone and the trees behind it give you something that feels completely different to anything else on the day, and it’s only a couple of minutes’ walk from your guests.

Dinner in the marquee

The castle’s own chefs work with you on the menu, and the wedding breakfast is served in a marquee looking back over the castle. In the evening, the party carries on there too.
